The Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Alan Givan recognised Adekanmi Abayomi with the Runner Up of The Brian McDowell Volunteer of the Year 2020 at the Mayor’s Community Awards Gala Event held at the Lagan Valley Island on 12th March 2020 to acknowledge his outstanding contribution and commitment to community development across the council area.
Speaking about the event, the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Alan Givan, commented: “Throughout my mayoral term to date I have met many groups and individuals. I am delighted that this evening we can acknowledge all the good work that takes places across a variety of sectors and how this influences the lives of so many people within our local community. The work of volunteers and organisations is truly inspirational, and I commend all those who selflessly dedicate time to support others.
“It is this type of work that the Mayor’s Community Awards have been designed to give well deserved recognition to. Bringing all these inspirational people under the one roof is our way of saying thank you. Well done to all our winners, the shortlisted nominees and to those who took the time to nominate their community heroes. I want to also thank our partners; the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, Volunteer Now and the Education Authority for their input to the Awards which demonstrated strong inter-agency working.”
Adekanmi thanked Mayor Givan for this worthy recognition and dedicated the award to all volunteers for their effort in making a real difference in our society. He quoted Sherry Anderson, saying that “Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.”
